Thirty-three years ago, the first women’s strike in Switzerland marked a turning point in the fight for equality. Despite the progress made, wage inequalities persist. In Switzerland, the wage gap between men and women is still 7.8%. This disparity cannot be explained by education, hierarchical level, or workload. The only explanation is gender.
This gap represents 717 CHF per month!
This unjust and unacceptable situation has persisted for far too long.
In addition to these wage inequalities, there are daily discriminations in the workplace. During hiring, promotions, or the recognition of skills, women are still too often disadvantaged. Women’s retirement income is also 35% lower than men’s. This precariousness is caused by wage inequalities, career interruptions, or part-time work necessary to fulfill family responsibilities. These systemic and historical inequalities must cease so that everyone is properly considered and can contribute equitably.
At the EQUAL-SALARY foundation, our goal is to eliminate these inequalities. We assess and certify companies that respect wage equality, and we advocate for transparency in remuneration practices and fair corporate policies that ensure equal opportunities. We encourage every company to set an example and establish equality not as an idea but as a foundation of their mission and values.
Our work requires a collective effort. We call on governments, companies, and citizens to join this movement. The women’s strike is an opportunity to once again show that we no longer accept injustice. Together, we can create a world where everyone, regardless of gender, skin color, or residency status, can live and work with dignity.
It is high time to take action.
